I just left a meeting of the Children and Youth Branch spending the day to:
- Promote an understanding of the Department’s strategic map and the Division’s work plan.
- Identify the components of the Department’s strategic map and the Division’s work plan that directly relate to the work of the Branch.
- Identify opportunities for the Branch to align with and support the priority work outlined for the Division and the Department.
I was impressed with and excited by the effort. This is what we all need to do individually, within our units and branches, and as a Division. We need to continually reflect back to the Strategic plan and remind ourselves what we are moving toward. We all need to be aware of how our Division work plan ties directly to the Department strategic plan. If any of you ever have questions about the PSD work plan or the Department (our) strategic plan, please stop by and ask me. This is where we are going together, as individuals, as a Division and as a Department.

NCSL Food Policy Scan: During the past decade, state legislatures and agencies have taken steps to fight the obesity epidemic and improve health by promoting healthy eating and physical activity. The National Conference of State Legislatures has researched state-by-state healthy food efforts and published the results in this report: Starting in the State: The Drive for Healthy Food Options in State Government. Please review the report, download it as a resource for your organization and share it with your colleagues. Contact Susan Motika for more information.

Lean Update
PSD Office Supply 5S Project Complete: The office supply moratorium has been lifted!! As of Feb. 15, PSD’s new Super-Supply Depot is open for business on the south side of the 4th floor near the Sanger room. The moratorium saved the Division nearly $20,000 since October 2011. Give yourselves a pat on the back for making due with current supply inventory over the past few months and demonstrating how we really can do more with less! Not only have we “Leaned” down our inventory, we’ve also Leaned the supply ordering process to include a single Supply Point of Contact for the Division (Erikka Apolinar) and no more PSD Purchase Request Forms. The new PSD Office Supply Ordering Process is outlined HERE. The full project plan, which includes how the supply room will be sustained going forward, can be read HERE. Thank you to the many staff members that made this Lean success possible - we truly couldn’t have done it without you. Please contact Leslie Akin with any questions/concerns and happy shopping!
Don’t forget the weekly Lean report-out this Friday from 9 to 9:30 a.m. in the Cleere/Sabin room. Instead of a group reporting out, this week features a short presentation on 5S, a fundamental Lean tool.
And, the second February 5S brown bag takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in C1A. Learn the basic elements of 5S and start using it.
