February is Heart Month: Focus on Health Literacy

February is filled with reminders of the heart. From American Heart Month to Congenital Heart Defects Awareness Week (February 7-14), from Valentine’s Day to Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day (February 22), the signs are all around us.

People with heart conditions have various self-care activities they must perform, such as monitoring their weight or blood pressure, controlling their salt and fluid intake, and assessing the effects of their medications.

And, people with limited health literacy may have difficulty understanding and using the health information associated with these critical activities.

You can help by using health literacy interventions that produce health benefits for patients. Improvements in patient outcomes can lead to costing savings for healthcare systems. Read these research articles that detail different interventions and check out CDC's Health Literacy portal for guidance and tools on client communication.

Put your heart into health literacy!
