Update on Insurance Coverage for Blood Pressure Monitors

A new Federal Register Final Rule was issued on Promoting Value-Based Insurance Design that identifies blood pressure monitors (for hypertension management), cardiac rehabilitation, and LDL testing for hyperlipidemia as three of the eight high-value services that “an issuer may want to consider offering with lower or zero cost sharing.” High value services are those that most people will benefit from and have a strong clinical evidence base demonstrating appropriate care. The high value services and drugs identified in the Final Rule are supported by strong clinical effectiveness evidence. This publication may help back efforts to secure coverage with potentially low or no cost-sharing for home blood pressure monitors.
