New Guidelines Released for Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease

The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology released new guidelines emphasizing the need for team-based care and a healthy diet, including reduced dietary cholesterol and sodium, to achieve good health and prevent cardiovascular disease. Annual calculations of body mass index and waist circumference, brisk daily activity and avoidance of tobacco products also is important to prevent CVD, according to the guidelines. Guidelines additionally call for evaluation of social determinants of health that affect individuals to inform treatment decisions.
