New Publication on Economic Review Methods
A new publication has been released about the methods used to evaluate the economic effectiveness of five cardiovascular disease prevention interventions recommended by the Community Preventive Services Task Force. Community Guide economic reviews provide evidence-based estimates of intervention costs and benefits that can be used to inform meaningful policy and program decisions. The methods discussed in this article may help others conduct complex systematic economic reviews of public health interventions.

Why is this important?
  • About 1 in every 6 health care dollars is spent on cardiovascular disease (CDC Million Hearts, 2017).
  • Every year direct and overall costs resulting from cardiovascular disease are estimated at $273 billion and $444 billion (CDC Million Hearts, 2011)
  • In the United States, 1 in every 4 deaths is due to heart disease (CDC, 2017).
