Researcher updates water fluoridation savings

Dr. Joan O'Connell, Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Denver - Anschutz Medical Campus, has recently published an article in Health Affairs that updates community water fluoridation program costs and benefits. The article highlights are:
  • Not only is community water fluoridation effective at reducing caries, it has been found to save money in this and other recent studies.
  • In 2013, per capita savings exceeded estimated per capita costs for the 211 million people with fluoridated water.
  • If the systems that do not fluoridate had, an additional $2.5 billion might have been saved.
  • Savings related to averted treatment is $32.19 per person.
