Addressing Racism in the Exam Room Using Racial Justice PDSAs

It's difficult to talk about racism. There’s often the fear that conversations will be polarizing rather than bring about greater understanding. The issue is especially challenging to address in health care, where devoted clinicians have spent their careers caring for others.

Does asking patients if they’ve experienced racism in the health care system call clinicians’ own professionalism into question? Abigail Ortiz, MSW, MPH, would say no. The Director of Community Health Programs at the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center in Boston, Massachusetts, and her team have been running what they call “Racial Justice PDSAs.”
