Healthy Food in Retail Stores and Farmer’s Markets--Upcoming Webinar on July 20

The retail food environment has a significant impact on the health of communities. Tune in to the next obesity networking call and webinar hosted by the Office of Planning, Partnerships and Improvement which will explain how and why this is true, and highlight ways it is being addressed here in Colorado.

The first speaker will be Sharon Crocco, Healthy Eating Active Living Program Coordinator at Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The webinar will explain how a lack of access to healthy and affordable options impacts health. The webinar will describe what can be done to improve access in retail settings such as small grocery and convenience stores. Participants will also learn what assistance and resources are available to local communities working to improve their food environments.

Wendy Peters Moschetti, Director of Food Systems at LiveWell Colorado will discuss two new initiatives coordinated by LiveWell Colorado:  Double Up Food Bucks and the Colorado Food Systems Digital Hub. Double Up provides incentives for SNAP recipients to purchase more Colorado-grown, fresh fruits and vegetables by matching every dollar a SNAP-recipient spends on SNAP-eligible foods (up to $20 per visit) with Double Up vouchers to be spent on produce.  The Colorado Food Systems Hub is a community resource designed to support healthy, resilient food systems across the state by providing relevant, reliable data—including enhanced mapping and reporting—in a collaborative environment that promotes peer-to-peer learning to increase impact and effect change.

The webinar is on Wednesday, July 20th from 2-3pm.
