State health launches campaign to promote Medicaid Tobacco Cessation Benefits: Webinar and other resources available

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is pleased to launch a statewide campaign to educate Medicaid enrollees about the benefits available to help them quit smoking.

The campaign, “Quitting Smoking is Covered with Medicaid!” will feature online and mobile ads in English and Spanish, and run May through June. Ads target the general Medicaid population and pregnant women.

New downloadable resources are available to support campaign messaging. State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP) Grantees can access the new templates via COHealthResources.org.

The mass media campaign is part of a larger effort to encourage physicians to educate patients about cessation benefits such as counseling and medications available to them as part of their health insurance with Medicaid. Physician training is available via a May 12 webinar that provides an overview of the Colorado Medicaid tobacco cessation pharmacy
benefit, including how to bill for services. There will be discussion on the physiological effects of nicotine addiction and the physical and psychological benefits of cessation. This webinar also will review a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) pilot project in a clinically-integrated health care network. Click HERE to register.
