Tips and Tools for Healthy Eating during the Holidays

The holiday season is here- a time when many people re-unite with family and friends over holiday meals and treats. It’s also a time when many people unintentionally gain weight, 3.35 lbs on average according to a New England Journal of Medicine study from 2000. This can make the holidays particularly difficult for people working hard to control or prevent Type 2 Diabetes through lifestyle management.

The CDC has released a new guide with 5 tips designed to help people manage their diabetes or prediabetes during the holidays. NDEP has also released new materials, including a video on how to eat healthy during family gatherings, a series of handouts on how to eat healthy in buffet-style settings, and a list of healthy recipes. Additionally, NDEP encourages people to use holiday gatherings as an opportunity to talk about diabetes in the family, since knowing your family history is a crucial part of knowing your risk for diabetes.

In Colorado, the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) provides similar kinds of support and education materials to help people prevent Type 2 Diabetes through lifestyle change and management. There are now over 25 providers of the National DPP in Colorado, and you can find a list of those providers here. For more information about the National DPP in Colorado, visit our website
