SAMHSA Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Trainings

The following dates and locations have been finalized for the SAMHSA Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training (SAPST) FY15-16 schedule. These trainings are FREE and open to anyone wanting to learn about primary substance abuse prevention.  This is a 3 day in person training from 9am to 5pm with online coursework to be completed prior to the 3 day training. 

February 9-11, 2016 - Durango
April 26-28, 2016 - Denver
May 10-12, 2016 - Gunnison
June 14-16, 2016 - Boulder

Registration and additional information will be sent out as we get closer to the Denver, Gunnison, and Boulder training 

This training was developed under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies contract (Reference #277-08-0218). This course can count toward the Colorado Certification for Prevention Specialists. 

Who Should Attend? 
New to prevention? Or are you an experienced professional who would benefit from a review of the basics? If so, then SAPST would be a great course for you. This training is required for CCPS II certification in Colorado. 


COURSE OVERVIEW 
INTRODUCTION TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION: UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS (Online): 5 hours of online coursework to be completed anytime between January 27-February 8, 2016 This foundational course offers practitioners new to the field of prevention, or working in related fields, an introduction to the history of prevention, key concepts and definitions, specific drug effects, and an informative glimpse into the effects of substance use and addiction on the brain. 

IN-PERSON SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION SKILLS TRAINING: February 9-11, 2016 This 3-day training addresses the following topics: 
  • Behavioral health  
  • Institute of Medicine’s Continuum of Care 
  • Public health approach 
  • Risk and protective factors 
  • Developmental perspective 
  • Application of SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework: assessment, capacity, planning, implementation, and evaluation 
  • Cultural competence and sustainability 

AVAILABILITY OF CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS Participants will receive two certificates for training hours – one for 5 hours (upon completion of the online course) and one for 26 hours (upon completion of the in-person training). These certificates can be submitted to your respective credentialing authority responsible for providing certification or approving continuing education credit.
