Million Hearts in Colorado: February is American Heart Month

Do you have high blood pressure? Are you working with patients to control their high blood pressure? Check out Million Hearts resources HERE.

February is American Heart Month. This year, Million Hearts® is encouraging Americans to know their blood pressure and if it's high, to make control their goal.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. In fact, about 70 million Americans have high blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are four times more likely to die from a stroke and three times more likely to die from heart disease. High blood pressure often shows no signs or symptoms, which is why having your blood pressure checked regularly is important. Today, it is easier than ever to get your blood pressure checked. Along with your health care providers, blood pressure screening is available at pharmacies, drug stores, and even at home using a home blood pressure monitor.

Nearly 1 million adult Coloradans were aware of having high blood pressure in 2013. Take a look at our fact sheet which examines the prevalence, trends, and disparities in high blood pressure awareness, hospital discharge rates, mortality rates, and comorbidities.

High blood pressure management is a key strategy of the  Million Hearts Initiative, an effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.  Colorado participates in this initiative and you can too. Be one in a million - make your commitment and pledge today.
