Use this month to raise awareness about the obesity epidemic and share information and ideas on creative solutions happening here in Colorado. You can make a difference for children by increasing awareness and encouraging communities, organizations, families and individuals to get involved.
Visit National Childhood Obesity Month page where you can:
- Download a toolkit to help raise awareness.
- Participate in the #COChildObesity Thunderclap - join to send an online message of awareness at the same time and date as a larger group of supporters. It's like an online flash mob.
- View the proclamation by Governor Hickenlooper.
- Get inspired by video stories of efforts by schools and communities across the state to reduce obesity.
Over the past four decades, childhood obesity has more than tripled and nearly 1 in 4 children in Colorado is overweight or obese. In 2009, Colorado spent more than $1.6 billion treating diseases and conditions related to obesity. If the rate of childhood obesity continues to rise, the long-term costs will skyrocket as will the loss to families and individuals as their loved ones suffer from preventable diseases caused by obesity.
Childhood obesity can be prevented. We know that healthy behaviors and the environment are strong predictors of health outcomes. Together, we can create a state where Colorado's children are eating healthier and moving more, which will pay dividends in the future.
