Million Hearts Colorado: New American Heart Association Sodium Reduction Campaign

According to new American Heart Association (AHA) consumer survey research, nearly 97% of 1,000 people surveyed either underestimated or could not estimate how much sodium they eat daily, with many survey respondents underestimating their intake by approximately 1,000 milligrams.

To raise awareness of Americans’ excess sodium intakes and the impact on health, AHA recently launched a new consumer sodium reduction campaign entitled, “I love you salt, but you’re breaking my heart.”

The campaign encourages people to take a pledge to reduce the sodium they eat, features a blog, quiz, and infographics, and provides links to lower-sodium recipes and educational articles on the website. The website also features a 1-minute video, “Don’t Let Salt Sneak Up On You” with the feature character, “Sneaky Salt."

Sodium reduction is a key strategy of the  Million Hearts Initiative, an effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.  The American Heart Association is a partner in this initiative and you can be a partner too. Be one in a million - make your commitment and pledge today.
