Diabetes prevention to be promoted at May 2 press conference

The American Diabetes Association will hold a press conference Friday, May 2, at 9 a.m.,at the Colorado State Capitol to highlight the increase in diabetes and strategies for reducing the risk for diabetes. Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia and Dr. Larry Wolk, executive director and chief medical officer for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment will speak about the impact diabetes has on Colorado. Garcia has lived with type 1 diabetes for over 30 years, has teamed up with the American Diabetes Association as the Honorary Chair of Tour de Cure Colorado.

There are nearly 26 million Americans - 316,000 in Colorado - who have diabetes. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, 7 million are unaware that they have the disease.  As many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take the steps to stop diabetes.
