  • Folic acid is a B-vitamin that is necessary for proper cell growth. Everyone needs folic acid. If taken before and during early pregnancy, folic acid can prevent from 50% to up to 70% of some forms of serious birth defects of the brain and spine.
  • In Colorado, 51% of women of reproductive age (18-44 years) reported taking a daily multivitamin in 2010. Among those in households earning less than $25,000 annually, 34% reported taking a daily multivitamin.
  • 35% of women delivering a recent live birth in Colorado reported taking a multivitamin, a prenatal vitamin, or a folic acid vitamin every day of the week during the month before they got pregnant. Among those on Medicaid, only 18% reported taking such vitamins.2
