Science Advisory Released: Hypertension Control Protocol

Improving clinical performance is a top priority for CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke
Prevention. Million Hearts® has prioritized improving blood pressure control in the U.S.   As part of this work, this week, CDC, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Cardiology issued a science advisory recommending that U.S. practices and health systems adopt and use evidence-based hypertension control protocols.

Using evidence-based hypertension control protocols can help improve blood pressure control, prevent heart attacks and strokes, and save lives. Protocols—of which there are many available—help extend the reach of the physician, nurse practitioner, and physician assistant to other key team members who can effectively and efficiently help people reach their blood pressure goals.

Click here to read the joint advisory. Sample protocols and a customizable protocol based on current guidelines are available on the Million Hearts® website .  A Journal of the American Medical Association viewpoint with CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden as lead author is also available.

High blood pressure management is a key strategy of the  Million Hearts Initiative, an effort to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over five years.  Colorado participates in this initiative and you can too. Be one in a million - make your commitment and pledge today.
