As one of the country’s foremost pediatric endocrinologists, Francine Kaufman, M.D. has had a distinguished career in diabetes care, research and advocacy. During this webinar, Dr. Kaufman will discuss statistics and research on diabetes in children, including the HEALTHY Study and the latest findings from the TODAY Study. Dr. Kaufman will also discuss efforts to change environmental factors related to obesity and diabetes in youth, including her advocacy within the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Leah Wyckoff, M.S., B.S.N., R.N., N.C.S.N., will present on the school nurse’s role in planning and coordinating the efforts of school personnel to help students, their health care team, school staff, and parents work together to provide for the student’s optimal diabetes management in the school setting.
As a school nurse, Ms. Wyckoff has experience using NDEP’s Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed: A Guide for School Personnel (School Guide). Ms. Wyckoff will provide examples of how the School Guide can be used to help inform school personnel about diabetes and share a set of practices that enable schools to ensure a safe learning environment for students with diabetes. Lastly, Joanne Gallivan, M.S., R.D., Director, NDEP at NIH will briefly review NDEP resources for youth with diabetes.
