Denver YMCA Tackles Obesity with MEND Program

The YMCA of Metropolitan Denver offers the "Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it" program at some of its facilities in an attempt to combat childhood and family obesity. The Colorado Health Foundation helps fund MEND, a program designed to promote healthy eating and physical activity for children age 7-13 years. By focusing on changing bad health habits and implementing new ones, the free 10-week program promises help for the entire family.

Classroom sessions with families cover a variety of topics, including behavior, nutrition, good food choices, cooking and meal planning.  At varying times, group dinners and field trips to local food markets are planned.

Children then are let loose in the YMCA gym and other facilities to encourage bonding and fun. While the children are playing, the parents are given more information on lifestyle changes and choices. For more information, contact Linda James at the Denver YMCA.
