Does Occupation Matter? High Blood Pressure Among US Workers

Nearly one-third of all American adults have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, which, combined are the leading causes of death in Colorado.Less than half of adults with hypertension have the condition under control.

Which occupational group has one of the highest rate hypertension and one of the lowest rates of awareness, treatment and control?

A new study assessing hypertension among US workers found that about one in five workers had hypertension and only 65% of workers getting treatment had their hypertension under control, even though 80% of the workers had health insurance. The authors suggest the need for worksite hypertension programs.

Hypertension control is a key strategy of the Million Hearts Initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over five years. Read more about the initiative at Million Hearts.
