Help for Dentists Working with Patients to Quit Smoking

Colorado works with dental schools and other organizations to raise awareness of the role dental providers can play in getting their patients to quit smoking. Chronic tobacco use equals periodontal disease and tooth loss. Research shows that effective tobacco cessation programs utilized in dental offices achieve quit rates of 10% -15%.  Motivating patients to quit smoking brings challenges, especially for most dental patients who do not equate oral health problems with tobacco use. But patients who trust their dental providers will listen to their suggestions. To learn how to talk to patients about ending their tobacco addiction, please review "Tobacco Cessation with a Twist," written by Karen Davis of Cutting Edge Concepts and presented by the Action to Quit network.
