Certain health professionals may be eligible to receive repayment of qualified student loans if they practice full time, in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), delivering primary health care services, in a public or nonprofit clinic. The practice must accept public insurance and offer discounted services to low-income, uninsured patients. Nontaxable awards may be made up to $35,000 for physicians and dentists; up to $20,000 for physician assistants, advanced practice nurses and mental health providers; and up to $7,500 for dental hygienists for each year of service. All contracts are for three years, thus the program’s goal is to facilitate long-term primary care provider retention in underserved Colorado communities.
