PSD Ranks Obesity Strategies

Obesity is one of Colorado's 10 Winnable Battles and a priority for the Prevention Services Division. More than 40 PSD team members actively participated in a two-day literature review “boot camp” to collaboratively identify effective physical activity and nutrition strategies that will advance Colorado’s efforts to combat obesity and overweight. The PSD Epidemiology, Planning and Evaluation Branch organized eight teams by obesity prevention setting/sector and led a search to locate relevant systematic reviews, peer-reviewed journal articles, and ‘grey literature’ – publications produced by government agencies. Standardized tools were used to critique the findings, systematically abstract key information, and rate evidence strength from emerging to proven strategies.

More than 40 strategies were identified for six sectors: worksites, community, built environment, media, food systems and health systems. Another group of strategies will be identified for schools and child care sectors on Feb. 6. By working in a collaborative manner, this process drew upon the expertise of professionals throughout PSD. These strategies will guide CDPHE in making informed decisions regarding obesity prevention strategies to implement at the state-level. In addition, the ratings of the strategies will inform the strategic planning process of the Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease and Pulmonary Disease (CCPD) grants program. Stay tuned for the final list of strategies organized by implementation setting and evidence rating as well as for updates on CDPHE’s prioritization process for obesity prevention strategies.
