LGBT Health Outcomes Planning Project Kick-Off Event - 8/31/11

Lesbian, gay and bisexual Coloradans have a higher prevalence than heterosexuals of smoking, binge drinking, current asthma and lack of needed emotional support. The percentage of homosexuals in our state who currently smoke (34%) is nearly twice that of heterosexuals (17%).  Bisexual people report experiencing mental health challenges at a rate nearly one third higher than that of heterosexual people
Despite these disparities, there is little data, limited understand and few health interventions planned for LGBT Americans. Colorado is one of less than a dozen states that include a demographic question about sexual orientation on its annual Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS).
Available research suggests that health disparities among LGBT citizens are the result of health care providers not being skilled in working with LGBT patients, as well as LGBT people not participating actively in their own health care due to fear of stigmatization by doctors, nurses and other professionals in the health care system.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is striving to understand the health needs and barriers of the state's LGBT population. With funding from a Healthy People 2020 Action Project, the department will undertake a multidisciplinary health improvement planning process to reduce disparities and improve the health of LGBT Coloradans. The LGBT Health Outcomes Planning Project (HOPP) will include coalition building, expanded surveillance, policy review and participatory planning activities with public health experts, community leaders and partner organizations over the course of the coming year..
As a result, CDPHE will produce a strategic plan that prioritizes concrete steps and funding mechanisms to advance LGBT health in several Healthy People 2020 target areas. We congratulate the members of this project team for their willingness to eliminate health disparities and improve the health of all Coloradans.
The kick-off event of the LGBT HOPP is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Exempla St. Joseph’s in Denver. Please plan to join us. For more information or to RSVP for the kick-off event, contact Julie Graves at Julie.Graves@state.co.us.
